3. TRANSCRIPT CONFERENCE 2010 — CDs AVAILABLE
I have made copies of the speeches from the Transcript Conference. The speakers were Will Estrada, Ben Trice and Warren Trice. I will place these cds in the Transcript Conference 2010 folder at the Library next week. If you would like a copy, please let me know and I will be sure to put an extra copy in there for you. Feel free to take your copy from there. Thanks!

4. GRHE USED BOOK SALE

How to sell:
Pre-registration deadline is Friday, May 21st
GRHE members $6 per 6’ table (2 table max)
Non—GRHE members $12 per 6’ table (2 table max)
Sellers may share table space.
Registrations postmarked after May 21st will be DOUBLE the price.
Table rentals are provided on a first come first serve basis.
Concessions will be available for purchase.

This is for new and prospective homeschoolers with the purpose of helping them to get started well and stay on the right track. Information will be given on the Virginia Home Education laws, how to get started, choosing curriculum, and the advantages of home educating your children. Any questions or concerns you have will be dealt with.

6. REGULARLY SCHEDULED HOMESCHOOL EVENTS (NOT sponsored by GRHE)
>> HOMESCHOOL CHESS CLUB
The Roanoke Homeschool Chess Club meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month from 6:30pm to 8:30 at Rainbow Forest Baptist Church, lower level. All ages and levels of players are invited, and there is an opportunity to participate in 7 to 8 area chess tournaments each year. The Club is an affiliate of the U.S. Chess Federation and led by a Certified Local Tournament Director, and our players have won many team and individual awards at the local, state, and national levels.
Meeting at the same time is a group of moms who enjoy knitting, cross stitch, needle point, and other textile crafts. We affectionately know them as the “Knit Wits”

7. AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE COURSE — Summer 2010
Dates: June 1 – July 24
Tuesdays & Thursdays
Final Saturday is a Project Day
Time: 5:00-6:15 PM
Place: 1349 Rainbow Forest Drive, Troutville, VA
Cost: $22 per week for 8 weeks
All materials provided and included in cost
Access to Internet strongly recommended
Course Summary: This is an introductory course. Students will learn introductory information regarding use of American Sign Language, deaf culture, and the history and development of their language.
Instructor: Dana Taylor is a Christian and wife of the Minister of Music for Rainbow Forest Baptist Church. Qualifications: VQAS written (2010), BSED in ASL Interpreting (2008), RID written (2007), SLPI Intermediate (2006)

8. HIGH SCHOOL ACTING/DRAMA CLASS FOR HOMESCHOOLERS
We need to find out if there would be interest for an Acting/Drama class which would start in the fall. Time and place are TBA, but the class would meet once a week for 1 ½ hours. The teacher will be Pete Burk, a local resident who has had roles in many big screen movies and TV shows. This is not a Christian class, but Mr. Burk will respect the fact that most or all of the students would be Christians.

9. HOMESCHOOL AVIATION CAMP
Smith Mountain Lake airport is having a homeschool aviation camp
Dates: June 7th – 11th
Time: 10am – 3pm
Cost: $600 (you provide lunch)
$649 (lunch provided)
Students will be learning about flying, planes, flight simulators and will be taking a field trip to Lynchburg’s national weather service! On the last day, they will be taken up for a graduation flight!!!
When I talked to the instructor, he said he has lots of great things planned for the kids. He’s thinking of teaching them to taxi the planes down the runway.
