Leaving Home

On Saturday I was discussing with another mother the cultural tendency in America to move away from your parents.  When did it seem like a good idea to leave everything you have ever known, and strike out in a completely new place?  Well, it was already in place when I was growing up; when I married in 1968, I assumed we would be moving.

Looking back, I realize the blessings and benefits that we inadvertently left behind.  My friend’s oldest child is 17, and she is already concerned that the cultural norm has affected her; she is already looking forward to “getting away” for college, even though she loves being home, and appreciates her loving family.

Although all of our children eventually moved away from us, the furthest away is Jenni, in AZ, and she was the one who never wanted to leave home.  God’s plans are not our plans.  This blog is to assure you — all of you who cannot enjoy the benefit and blessings of home and family close by — that He has your heart in His hands.  If you come from a loving family, and miss them SO much….knowing that if you were nearer to Mom and Dad, sister or brother, that you would have such sweet fellowship, instant understanding, and possible baby-sitting [or even teaching], know that your Father understands and is sympathetic.  I have often wondered at the dynamic that existed in the Godhead when Jesus was here on earth — an intrinsic part of God, and yet here….not there.

Jesus had work to do, and so do we.  Know that He will uplift you and that His will is perfect.  I have seen such growth in my daughter as she has struggled with being 2500 miles away that I am awed and strengthened by it.  Even though they moved there for the job, and not to be missionaries, they have become missionaries…serving the Lord with their precious four children.

Lean upon the Lord when you feel lonely for family connections; seek to show the love YOU have enjoyed to others who don’t understand loving relationships; and cherish the times you can make those trips home.  [But I know you do!!]
