HOME EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION OF VIRGINIA (HEAV)

For many years, HEAV has served Virginia’s home schooling community in numerous ways, including maintaining a full time lobbyist during the General Assembly Session.

They also sponsor a statewide convention and curriculum fair, offer newsletters, helps for new homeschoolers and more.

HOME SCHOOL LEGAL DEFENSE ASSOCIATION (HSLDA)

The Home School Legal Defense Association is a nonprofit nationwide organization established to defend and protect the constitution al rights of parents to home educate.

In addition to lobbying on the national level and serving as watchdogs for anti-home education legislation, HSLDA will defend members in court if necessary.

They also answer questions and solve many small problems with school officials.

Membership cost is $115 per year.  GRHE members qualify for the discounted price of $95 per year.  GRHE highly recommends you join HSLDA if at all possible. Learn more at www.hslda.org.

 


OTHER AREA HOME EDUCATING ORGANIZATIONS

HOME EDUCATORS OF RAINBOW FOREST (HERF)

This church based organization is the second largest support group in the Roanoke Valley. It is open for members of Rainbow Forest Baptist Church and others who agree with their statement of faith. They also have an active co-op called SALT. More information can be found at their website www.herfonline.org.

AFRICAN-AMERICAN SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS

We have several African-American families in our organization, but there is not a local support group specifically geared to their specialized needs. However, there are two national organizations that we are aware of that provide resources and information to black families.

Membership provides newsletter and discounts to events, NBH materials, and conferences. NBH members share information on history and curriculum and develop friendships through the Internet, telephone, or support groups. Future plans include a data-base of African-American studies and inventors.
