Local School Districts
Contact information for area school districts are listed below. We recommend that you be thoroughly familiar with the Virginia home education law. In the past school officials have occasionally put extra stipulations on testing, evaluations, parent qualifications, etc. It is advisable for you to know the law, so that you only give the local school officials what is required under the Virginia statute.
Procedure to home educate under the 1984 home instruction law.
- Fill out an intent form for home education which is due by August 15th preceding the school year in which you plan on homeschooling.
- Send your intent form to your local school system as listed below.
- Make sure all correspondence is sent certified mail with return receipt.
- Keep copies in your files of all correspondence made to the school system.
Please be aware that the home education law neither requires nor allows personal meeting or visits with or by school officials. If you asked for a meeting, politely refuse and let them know you have done everything required by law. If someone comes to your door, politely refuse to speak to them, except to let them know you have met the requirements of the law. With any contact (phone or personal) tell them to feel free to put any question in writing and you will respond in writing.
GRHE highly recommends that you be a member of HSLDA. HSLDA will represent you in any dealings with your local school system.
